The Thirst Trap: Glassmorphism and the Science That Doesn't Hold Water

Designers love saying glassmorphism works because we evolved to seek water. I loved saying it too. Then I read the study the whole story leans on, and the replication that came back empty.

There's a story designers tell about frosted glass, and for a while I told it too. It goes like this: we like glossy, translucent, wet-looking surfaces because our ancestors who noticed glistening water outlived the ones who didn't. Glassmorphism works, the story says, because every blurred panel and specular highlight whispers to a million-year-old part of the brain that just found a river. I have shipped this aesthetic on client dashboards and liked it on my own screens, and I will admit the story made the work feel deeper: my taste, backed by evolution itself. Which is exactly the kind of flattery that made me suspicious. I have been burned before by science that agrees with me, so this time I went looking for the actual papers before repeating the line in one more deck.

The short version: the chain of evidence has four links, three of them hold something real but general, and the one load-bearing link, the study that specifically ties our liking for gloss to an innate need for water, failed to replicate. The thirst story is not established science. It is a beautiful caption written over a much more boring mechanism that designers should actually care about more, because the boring mechanism is the one you can design with.

The chain, laid out link by link

Every version of the water story, traced back through the design blogs that repeat it, rests on the same four-step chain. One: the visual system reads gloss and saturation as wetness. Two: humans respond positively to water and nature. Three: therefore our preference for glossy surfaces evolved as a water-detection instinct. Four: therefore translucent, glossy interfaces are compelling because they satisfy that instinct.

Written out like that, you can already see the shape of the problem. Links one and two are about perception and general wellbeing. Link three is the evolutionary claim doing all the work. Link four is not studied by anyone at all: no peer-reviewed HCI experiment has ever tested whether a frosted-glass interface triggers a water-related response. The last link of the chain, the one the entire design narrative hangs from, is pure extrapolation. So the question becomes whether link three can carry the weight. It leans, almost entirely, on one paper.

The study the whole story leans on

The paper is Meert, Pandelaere and Patrick (2014), "Taking a shine to it: How the preference for glossy stems from an innate need for water," in the Journal of Consumer Psychology. It is a genuinely clever set of six studies, and it deserves to be described accurately, because the design-blog telephone game usually garbles it. Adults preferred leaflets printed on glossy paper over identical matte ones. Kindergarten-age children preferred glossy images too, which the authors read as evidence the preference is not learned. Participants rated aquatic landscapes as glossier than desert ones. Blindfolded participants who touched glossy paper imagined more water in a described landscape. And in the study everyone loves to retell, 126 participants ate salty crackers, some with water to drink and some without, and the thirsty group rated glossy photos as more attractive than the quenched group did. Greater thirst, stronger gloss preference. That last one is Study 5 in the paper's own numbering, not Study 3 as half the internet has it, a small error that tells you how many writers read the summary of a summary rather than the paper.

Even the authors hedged more than their fans do: in their own framing, the glossy preference is only partly attributable to a water association. And one practical note for anyone tempted to quote effect sizes from this paper: the precise statistics sit behind a paywall, so what circulates publicly is the design and the direction of the effects, not their magnitude. That detail matters for what happened next.

The replication that came back empty

In 2021, Silvia, Rodriguez, Cotter and Christensen attempted a careful replication of the core effect, published open access in Behavioral Sciences. Their version was tighter than the original: identical landscape prints, with the matte condition created by spraying clear matte finish over the same glossy prints, so paper, color, and resolution stayed constant and only the finish varied. One hundred participants after exclusions, gloss manipulated between persons so nobody could guess the game.

The result, in their own words: people rated the glossy pictures as more attractive than the matte ones, but the effect was small and not statistically significant, d = −0.23, with a confidence interval running from −0.62 to 0.16 and p = 0.250. Their conclusion: little evidence for replication of the core finding. The one significant result in the paper is almost mischievous. The glossy preference was moderated by the aesthetic-appreciation facet of Openness to Experience, and it was the people scoring low on aesthetic appreciation who showed the classic strong preference for glossy. People high on it liked the images either way. If you want to keep the evolutionary story after reading that, you have to explain why the ancient water instinct fires mainly in people who care least about visual art.

Fairness requires the other half: something adjacent did replicate. The same lab found in 2018 that people reliably rate shiny, mirror-polished coins and copper cylinders as more attractive than dull ones. A general liking for shiny objects seems real. What failed is the specific bridge from that liking to water detection, and the strength of the effect for flat printed images, which are, notably, what a screen is.

What actually survives scrutiny

I want to be precise here, because the honest picture is not "it's all nonsense." It is a gradient, and it sorts into three tiers.

The solid tier is perception science. Sawayama, Adelson and Nishida (2017) showed that raising chromatic saturation and shifting the luminance distribution reliably makes dry scenes look wet; they even defined a "wetness enhancing transformation" you can apply to a photo. The visual system genuinely computes something like wetness from image statistics, and glassmorphism's saturated, highlight-flecked translucency sits right in that zone. But this is a finding about what we perceive, with nothing attached about what we prefer or why.

The middle tier is the nature-and-water wellbeing literature, real but broad and tangled. Ulrich's famous 1984 study in Science found that 23 surgical patients with a window view of trees recovered faster and took fewer strong painkillers than 23 matched patients facing a brick wall: foundational, tiny, and about vegetation rather than water. A 2017 systematic review of 35 blue-space studies found consistent positive associations between living near water and mental wellbeing, alongside repeated warnings that the evidence is correlational and confounded by exercise, sound, and social life. Biophilia itself, in E. O. Wilson's original formulation, is a hypothesis about affiliation with living things, not a proven mechanism. All of this supports "humans tend to feel good around nature and water." None of it gets you to "and therefore blurred panels on a phone."

The bottom tier is the design-blog chain itself, the leap from all of the above to interfaces, which no study has tested. It reads as rigorous because each ingredient has a citation. The dish as a whole has none.

The boring explanation that works

So why does glassmorphism actually feel good? The answer with the strongest evidence is almost insultingly practical: processing fluency. Reber, Schwarz and Winkielman's 2004 review makes the case that aesthetic pleasure tracks how easily the visual system can process what it sees, driven by contrast, symmetry, clear figure-ground separation, prototypicality. Look at what a competent glassmorphic panel actually does: the background blur separates layers, the soft shadow establishes depth, the hierarchy becomes legible at a glance. It is figure-ground clarity, manufactured. No ancestral riverbank required.

Then add the explanations that are not psychological at all. The trend is platform-dictated: Vista's Aero in 2007, iOS 7's frosted layers in 2013, Big Sur in 2020, the same year Michal Malewicz coined the word "glassmorphism" and gave the look a name to spread under, and Apple's Liquid Glass in 2025 with real-time refraction. It is also technically-afforded: real-time Gaussian blur was expensive until GPUs made it free, and design trends follow cheap capabilities the way plants follow light. And it is fashion, cycling roughly every seven years like everything else in our industry.

Here is the part I find genuinely funny, in the way good founder myths are funny: the water story itself is a fluency effect. It is vivid, it is simple, it links your work to deep time, and it explains a complicated preference with one image. It feels true for exactly the reason glossy panels feel pleasant. The story about the instinct is doing the thing it attributes to the instinct.

An instinct wouldn't need an off switch

There is one more argument against the innate-appeal story, and it comes from the part of my job that involves reading accessibility reports rather than evolutionary psychology. If translucent interfaces tapped a universal, evolved preference, you would not expect them to generate a documented usability backlash. Yet WCAG asks for a 4.5:1 contrast ratio on normal text, and one agency's testing of Liquid Glass clocked ratios around 1.5:1 in places. Nielsen Norman Group's assessment of iOS 26 was titled, without much diplomacy, "Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers", describing an interface that is restless and constantly pulling focus. Apple subsequently shipped a "Tinted" toggle to let people turn the glass down, on top of the "Reduce Transparency" accessibility setting that has existed since iOS 7, which is to say, since the very first year of the modern frosted era.

Sit with that last fact for a second. The aesthetic supposedly rooted in a universal instinct has shipped, for over a decade, with a built-in setting for turning it off, and a meaningful number of people use it. Thirst does not come with a toggle. Preferences this contested, this dependent on lighting conditions and eyesight and context, look much more like fashion plus fluency than like biology.

What changes in my work

Practically, this reading changed three things, and none of them is "stop using glass." First, I now design the effect for the mechanism that actually has evidence: fluency. Blur earns its place when it separates layers and clarifies hierarchy, and it loses its place the moment it costs legibility, because the same literature that explains why glass feels pleasant also predicts exactly when it stops feeling pleasant: when it makes processing harder. The contrast ratio is not a compliance chore fighting the aesthetic. It is the aesthetic's own operating condition.

Second, the water story comes out of my client vocabulary. Not because a myth in a deck is a crime, but because I have spent three essays now on the same lesson: wanting a flattering story to be true is the strongest reason to check it, and a claim that dissolves under one replication is not something to build a rationale on. The craft reasons for translucency, depth, hierarchy, and material continuity stand perfectly well on their own, and they have the advantage of being true.

And third, quieter: I notice I keep writing this same essay in different clothes. The play excuse, the founder myth, now the thirst instinct. Each time, a story that flatters the work turns out to be resting on one overloaded study, and each time the honest version turns out to be more useful than the romantic one. At some point I have to admit this is no longer fact-checking. It is a habit of distrusting whatever compliments me, and so far it has paid for itself every single time.
